Level B2 (Upper intermediate) of the CEFR is the level of confirmed autonomy. At this level, you can:
- Understand the main ideas of complex texts, including technical topics in your field
- Communicate fluently and spontaneously with native speakers without particular strain
- Express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics
- Take a stance on current topics and explain their advantages and drawbacks
B2 is often the required level in international companies, administrative competitive exams, admissions abroad and professional certifications.

B2 is required for: professional certifications (TOEIC 785+), master's programmes in France or abroad, some public-sector competitive exams, international positions and the upper-intermediate ECL exam.

B2 strategy: once grammar and vocabulary are mastered, focus on phrasal verbs and idioms — that is what sets a genuine B2 apart from a B1.
How long does it take to go from B1 to B2?
Moving from B1 to B2 usually takes around 200 hours of guided practice — often longer than the jump into B1. The reason is that B2 is no longer about knowing more rules: it is about handling nuance, longer sentences and implicit meaning at natural speed, which only sustained exposure builds.

B2 (Upper intermediate) means you understand the essentials of complex topics, communicate fluently with native speakers and express yourself clearly and in detail on many subjects. It is the level of confirmed autonomy.
Level B2 corresponds to a TOEIC score between 785 and 899 points. For the ECL exam, level B2 is reached with a score of roughly 71 to 85 out of 100.
The B1 → B2 transition requires in-depth work on advanced grammar (subjunctive, complex passive voice), idiomatic vocabulary (phrasal verbs, idioms) and comprehension of complex texts. Regular practice of 45 min/day combining all the ECL Anglais modules makes it possible to reach this level in 3 to 6 months.
Level B2 yields a very good ECL score (71–85/100). To aim for the maximum (C1, score 86+), you need to master advanced linguistic nuances. B2 is nevertheless the target level for the vast majority of ECL candidates.
