What is level B1 in English?

Level B1 (Intermediate) is defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At this level, you can:

  • Understand the main points of a clear text on everyday topics
  • Deal with most situations while travelling in an English-speaking country
  • Produce simple, coherent speech on familiar topics
  • Write simple texts on everyday topics or subjects of personal interest

B1 is a pivotal level: it proves real autonomy in English and is required in many professional, academic and administrative contexts.

Who is this level for?

How long does it take to reach B1 English?

Reaching B1 from a solid A2 usually takes 150 to 200 hours of guided practice, according to the reference ranges published for the CEFR. What changes that figure is not talent but regularity: twenty minutes every day beats three hours every Sunday, because B1 is mostly about turning known rules into automatic reflexes.
